Teatro Live is delighted to announce the advent of Farren Timoteo as our new artistic director, succeeding Andrew MacDonald-Smith, who steps down at the end of the current 2024/25 season. Farren has a twenty year history with Teatro as a performer, director and writer. He made his company debut in 2005 in A Momentary Lapse and his subsequent appearances have included Mother of the Year, A Rocky Night for His Nibs, Marvelous Pilgrims, A Grand Time in the Rapids, and most recently Far Away and Long A-Gogo. He was part of the writing team for the Teatro original musicals The Infinite Shiver and Everybody Goes to Mitzi’s, also serving as director of the latter’s first production.

For the last 18 years, Farren served as artistic director of Alberta Musical Theatre (formerly Alberta Opera), the company which tours original musical production to schools throughout the province. During his tenure, the company dramatically expanded its number of annual bookings and established itself in a permanent Old Strathcona venue, The Playhouse, which it shares with Concrete Theatre.

Farren has also maintained a robust freelance career across Canada as a performer, director, and writer. He’s been seen at the Citadel frequently in productions such as Jersey Boys, The Fiancée,

As You Like It, Peter and the Starcatcher, and Monty Python’s Spamalot, and he’s also appeared locally with Freewill Shakespeare Festival, The Mayfield Dinner Theatre, and Norther Light Theatre, among others. Since 2016 he has been touring nationally in Made in Italy, the one-man show he wrote based on his family history, with productions in Edmonton, Vancouver, Calgary, Kamloops, and Saskatoon, with a Toronto run presented by Mirvish Productions opening in May of this year.

Farren has been the recipient of several Elizabeth Sterling Haynes Awards for performance and directing, and he’s also received Calgary’s Critic’s Choice and Betty Mitchell Awards,  and Vancouver’s Betty Mitchell Award.

Farren is currently collaborating with Andrew MacDonald-Smith and resident Teatro playwright Stewart Lemoine on plans for Teatro Live’s 2025/26 season. His tenure as artistic director officially commences on September 1, 2025.
